Several South Haven area fire departments responded to a structure fire at 10767 53rd Street in Columbia Township on Tuesday morning.
South Haven Area Emergency Services says Columbia Township firefighters were dispatched at 9:55 a.m. while mutual aid was provided by the Bangor Community, Bloomingdale Township, Lee Township fire departments, and SHAES.
The fire started in a garage and spread to the nearby home. Firefighters successfully contained the fire and prevented its spread to the residence.
The homeowner said the fire started when he was trying to start the engine of a boat in the garage. He said he tried unsuccessfully to extinguish the blaze with a fire extinguisher.
The occupants escaped without injury.
Van Buren EMS also responded.
