The Berrien County Board of Commissioners has approved a resolution to apply for a state grant to continue a program to help find alternatives to incarceration for jail inmates.

The county is seeking just under $187,000 to maintain Community Corrections Advisory Board programming. Among other things, it provides services including anger management counseling, substance abuse testing, and pretrial supervision for felony offenders, affecting about 260 probationers each year.

The board this week authorized the grant application to the Michigan Department of Corrections, noting the goal of the program is to reduce jail costs and recidivism.

If approved, the grant program would cover the county from October 1 of this year through September 30 of next year.
