Pérez (2-1) gave up two hits and four walks while striking out five. He lowered his ERA to 2.22. The Tigers lost starter Casey Mize to an injury in the third inning. Mize (2-2) was removed after straining his groin covering first base on a ground ball.

White Sox 5, Angels 2 – Romo hits first 2 career home runs as White Sox beat Soriano and Angels, 5-2
Drew Romo hit the first two home runs of his career — one from each side of the plate — as the Chicago White Sox beat the skidding Los Angeles Angels 5-2. Colson Montgomery homered in the second off Angels starter José Soriano, ending his shutout streak at 25 2/3 innings. The right-hander gave up three runs over five innings in his first loss this season, raising his major league-leading ERA from 0.24 to 0.84. Davis Martin outpitched Soriano, allowing one run in 5 2/3 innings while improving to 4-1. Seranthony Domínguez worked a hitless ninth for his seventh save. Josh Lowe homered and Jo Adell had an RBI single for the Angels, who have lost five straight and nine of 10.

NBA – Ex-NBA player Damon Jones is 1st to plead guilty in gambling sweep
Former NBA player and assistant coach Damon Jones has become the first person to plead guilty in a gambling sweep that led to the arrests of more than 30 people, including reputed mobsters and other basketball figures. During back-to-back hearings in Brooklyn federal court on Tuesday, Jones pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. He was charged in separate cases with profiting from rigged poker games and providing sports bettors with nonpublic information about injuries to stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis, according to court filings. The 49-year-old previously pleaded not guilty in both cases. He’s due to be sentenced Jan. 6. He and his lawyer declined to comment after the hearings.

NBA – NBA moves closer to anti-tanking measures with drastic change to lottery odds
The NBA has moved closer to a slightly expanded 16-team lottery, one that will flatten odds of winning the No. 1 pick and try to deter tanking by drastically lowering the chances of winning for the teams that finish with the three worst records. The proposal, which was reviewed by the league’s general managers, will be further discussed before it goes the Board of Governors for a final vote that is expected next month. It will not change the current format, which will likely be utilized for the final time when the lottery for this year’s draft is held May 10. This would go into effect next year.

NFL – Lions pick up Jahmyr Gibbs’ 5th-year option and decline option for Jack Campbell
The Detroit Lions have picked up the fifth season of Pro Bowl running back Jahmyr Gibbs’ contract and declined All-Pro linebacker Jack Campbell’s fifth-year option, according to a person familiar with the moves. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the decisions were not announced. Detroit drafted both players in 2023 and they have helped the franchise win 36 games, two NFC North titles and reach a conference championship game. Gibbs is the one of four players in league history to gain at least 4,500 yards from scrimmage and score at least 45 touchdowns through three seasons.

NCAAMBB – Michigan reloads with 9 newcomers for potential run to another title
Michigan basketball coach Dusty May has announced that three players have been added from the transfer portal and two incoming freshman are joining four high school seniors who were signed in November. May had to add an influx of talent because All-America player Yaxel Lendeborg exhausted his eligibility while Aday Mara, Morez Johnson Jr. and Elliot Cadeau declared for the NBA draft. Cincinnati center Moustapha Thiam, Tennessee forward J.P. Estrella and LSU forward Jalen Reed transferred to Michigan. Highly touted recruit Brandon McCoy joins forward Lincoln Cosby to cap a recruiting class with four previously signed players.

Indy500 – Testing takes flight as Grosjean inadvertently hits bird during early run
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Romain Grosjean’s first Indianapolis 500 test session took flight quickly Tuesday. As he navigated a 200-plus mph lap through the third turn on the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s 2.5-mile oval, Grosjean’s No. 18 Honda clipped a bird — not far from the 12th green of the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course where the goal is to make birdies. Grosjean, left with no choice at such a high speed, did the only thing he could. The implications of that regrettable result were splattered across the left leg of Grosjean’s fire suit. He posted the sixth-fastest lap of the day at 224.307 mph. Conor Daly turned the fastest lap of the day at 225.384. Jack Harvey had the fastest now-tow speed at 220.318. A second day of testing is scheduled for Wednesday. The race is set for May 24.
