Report finds decline in Michigan overdose deaths

Overdose deaths are dropping in Michigan.

A recent report from the CDC shows the number of Michiganders dying was down slightly in 2023 compared to the prior year.

Bridge Michigan reporter Robin Erb says details are scarce on why the numbers really fell.

“The deaths did drop and that’s good news, but they only dropped slightly,” Erb said. “We still lose way too many Michiganders every year to drug deaths. The raw numbers last year, we still lost 2,931 people to these very avoidable deaths. Now we don’t have a lot of details on these numbers yet, these are preliminary numbers from the CDC, but we do know again they dropped.”

Erb says one reason for the drop in deaths could be more users are using testing strips on their drugs to find out if anything’s been added.
