There’s been a big disappointment for organizers of the Mackinac Policy Conference on Mackinac Island next week. Detroit Regional Chamber CEO Sandy Baruah says a planned U.S. Senate debate isn’t happening.

We were planning to host a debate with the top three Democrats and the top three Republicans vying for the open U.S. Senate seat, but we’ve had to cancel that largely because the two top candidates on both sides have declined,” Baruah said.

The Detroit Chamber hosts the Mackinac Policy Conference each year.

Baruah says Elissa Slotkin and Mike Rogers gave various reasons for declining to accept the invite to debate. He says today’s politics “increasingly discourage candidates from directly addressing voters’ concerns” with candidates favoring “sound bites, clicks, and “likes.”
