The future of AM radio was front in the U.S. House on Tuesday. This comes after automakers stated they are going to start taking AM radio out of cars.

Congressman Tim Walberg defended AM radio during a hearing.

AM radio is some of the last truly local content available and presuming consumer access to that content is necessary,” Walberg said. “Satellites certainly won’t advertise local stores in my district. I’m also a strong advocate for consumer choice. The customer should drive what companies do and what options they have for their products.”

Walberg and other lawmakers talked about AM radio being especially important in rural communities, where one of the biggest problems is not having reliable internet connection.
