Congressman Tim Walberg has introduced legislation that would create a special postage stamp designed to raise money to support the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

Walberg says the GLRI has helped protect and improve the Great Lakes since it was created in 2010. While the program is allocated hundreds of millions of dollars per year, the stamp proposed by Walberg and Congresswoman Debbie Dingell would be a boost to the effort.

The Great Lakes Restoration Semipostal Stamp Act directs the United States Postal Service to issue a stamp with Great Lakes artwork. Anyone looking to support the Great Lakes would then be able to buy a stamp at a price slightly above that of first-class postage with the difference being transferred to support the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

The legislation would cost taxpayers nothing.

Cosponsors of the stamp legislation include several House members from Michigan, Bill Huizenga among them.
