Michigan Chamber promoting civics education

Do you know the three branches of government? Not everyone does and that’s why the Michigan Chamber of Commerce is going to have a competition for middle schoolers.

Group President Jim Holcomb spoke to Michigan News Network about the new initiative.

“We’re bringing to Michigan the National Civics Bee, and we’re trying to work with teachers and students and parents to come together and enhance their civil knowledge, civic engagement,” Holcomb said. “We’ll focus on civility and how kids can learn to be good in their community, be good citizens.”

Holcomb says 6th, 7th, and 8th graders have until February 19 to submit an essay for the first round of the National Civics Bee in Michigan.
