State Senator Aric Nesbitt says Michigan can do more to prevent incidents like the mass shooting at Michigan State University. He issued a statement after Monday’s shooting that killed three, saying as “a parent, it is impossible to comprehend the fear, pain, and helplessness that the Spartan community experienced.” He says as a lawmaker, he wants “desperately to help keep students and families across our state safe from these irrational acts of evil.” Nesbitt is calling for lawmakers to “cast aside talking points, work together toward real solutions, and do more to protect our children.” He suggests continuing efforts to make schools safer while also pursuing improvements to mental health screening and care. He adds it’s critical current laws are enforced. Nesbitt says he’ll work with anyone to find solutions, but adds “proposing bills that do not address the root causes of this epidemic just to do something is just as bad as doing nothing.”
