An organization pushing for an end to gun violence is urging state lawmakers to enact new legislation in the first 100 days of the new term. Giffords Gun Owners for Safety of Michigan President Jonathan Gold says it’s time for common sense laws.

“For the first time we have a majority of representation in government who wants to take a stand on gun safety issues,” Gold said. “It’s been pretty obvious over the last 20 years in Michigan that it hasn’t been an emphasis. So, legislative sessions come and go very quickly. It’s only a two year span of time to get things done, and we know in government terms, we could have to use every day of those last two years.”

Gold says supporters of gun violence legislation are pushing for universal background checks, extreme risk protection orders, safe storage laws, and protections for victims of domestic violence. Events were held across the state Wednesday for supporters of reforms to make their call.
