Congressman Fred Upton will make his final drive from Washington back to St. Joseph as a member of the U.S. House this week after voting on a spending bill. He tells us after serving for 40 years, he can reflect on a lot.

“I will have cast in my years in Congress more than 21,000 votes,” Upton said. “I’ve made better than 99.9%. I was in the hospital for a few days a few years ago, I was in Iraq visiting our troops in a week that we weren’t supposed to have votes and they were called…but it’s a pretty good record. Nobody’s voted more than I since I’ve been in the Congress.”

Upton says he and his wife will remain in St. Joseph where he intends to stay busy.

“We’ve gotten a lot of nice messages on the email and whatnot, and we’ve gotten a lot of nice comments from people since I announced my retirement last April. So, life moves on, and as my wife says, we’ll live happily ever after. We sure hope to.”

As his term winds down, he tells us he no longer has an office or even a work phone. However, he’ll be working until the end, saying he has a mobile office — his shoes.
