Tourism was a $27 billion industry in Michigan before the pandemic and state leaders are talking ways to bring it back. Tourism officials from around the state gathered in Detroit Wednesday for the Michigan Tourism Conference. Pure Michigan Vice President Dave Lorenz told Michigan News Network travel is coming back.

“As we continue to battle COVID and other challenges, we’re going to continue to be part of that leadership to move us forward as a society,” Lorenz said. “The travel and tourism industry is such an important part of our lives, and I think one thing is really clear that’s come out of COVID. It’s that people have come to better understand the value of travel and tourism.”

Lorenz is concerned about recent nationwide flight cancellations, but is confident they’ll figure it out. He says a recent study shows that people want to travel over the holidays and get their lives back.
