Planning Commission Offers Winter Water Quality Tips

The Southwest Michigan Planning Commission is urging everyone to take steps to ensure they don’t pollute local water sources this winter. It says when snow and ice melt, the salt goes with them, washing into our lakes, streams, wetlands, and groundwater. So, it recommends using non-toxic de-icing substances to melt ice. Chemical de-icers can be hazardous to animals and plants alike. The Southwest Michigan Planning Commission says you can use alternatives like biodegradable cat litter, sand, or fireplace ash. Also, there’s the old fashioned way of removing ice — with elbow grease. Everyone is also reminded to winterize their vehicles and have them checked for leaks.
