Opening for the season this week is the Benton Harbor Farmers Market. Berrien County Health Department spokesperson Gillian Conrad tells WSJM News since it’s an outdoor event, people can social distance and still make healthy food purchases.

“We’ll be there every Wednesday through the beginning of September with a wide variety of locally grown and affordable fresh fruits and vegetables,” Conrad said.

The Benton Harbor Farmers Market will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Dwight P. Mitchell City Center Park each Wednesday starting this week. Conrad says the usual cooking demonstrations and activities for the kids will not be happening due to COVID-19.

“The market will not be offering any of those special events or activities that we’ve had in years past, and there will be additional precautions in place to further prevent illness, including encouragement of social distancing, wearing face coverings, and some built-in hand hygiene opportunities.”

Conrad says the sellers are all local, many of them smaller, so making purchases at the Benton Harbor Farmers Market is not only healthy, but good for the local economy. They take Bridge and WIC Cards, and Conrad says the Double Up Food Bucks program is back, meaning you can double your money when shopping with a Bridge Card.
