Governor Gretchen Whitmer is defending the state’s action in keeping nursing homes safe during the coronavirus. A final report on how many people in nursing homes have died from the virus is due in the coming weeks. The governor said this week it is taking longer because the state is analyzing each death.

“Many states, they’ve seen huge, skyrocketing numbers in terms of people dying of pneumonia,” Whitmer said. “It’s probably COVID-19 deaths, but they haven’t done the hard work of going back and analyzing all of the data. We’re doing that, and it sets us apart, but it also makes it more challenging, and it takes longer to do.”

Whitmer says there was not one nursing home that took a patient with coronavirus because they were compelled to.
