There’s a new telephone scam targeting Michigan residents. Attorney General Dana Nessel is joining forces with Michigan Department of Health and Human Services director Robert Gordon and Michigan State Police to get the word out about this one, in which callers pretend to be state health employees. They’re spoofing the DHHS phone numbers in Kalamazoo County to make the call look like it’s coming from an official, and they trying to get personal information that could be used to steal identities. Nessel says if you get a call like that, don’t give out any information and hang up immediately. She adds the next step is to report the call to police or her office.

Similar scams have been reported with people posing as local health department workers in Bay, Jackson, Livingston, Monroe, and Washtenaw counties. Gordon says one big red flag to listen for is being asked for detailed information, noting a legitimate department caseworker would at the most just need a date or birth or the last four digits of your Social Security number, not the entire thing.
