Program Enables Credit Union Employees To Support Communities

Employees of United Federal Credit Union have been able to donate more than $16,000 around their communities in the past year thanks to the organization’s Pay it Forward program. With Pay it Forward, UFCU gives each employee $15 to donate to those in need. They get to pick who they support. Many times, departments and branches combine their funds to create a more substantial donation. United CEO Terry O’Rourke tells WSJM News Pay it Forward was created at the request of employees.

“It started in 2008 when employees requested that money used for holiday parties instead be used to better the community, and for 12 years, the program has grown because of the generous nature of our employees,” O’Rourke said.

In all, O’Rourke says the 2019 United Federal Credit Union Pay it Forward program resulted in $16,400 going out to 56 different families, individuals, and community organizations. Among the organizations to get support this year are the Children’s Advocacy Center of Southwest Michigan, the Humane Society of Southwest Michigan, Emergency Shelter Services in Benton Harbor, and the Cora Lamping Center.
