Congressman Fred Upton welcomed a team from Western Michigan University to Washington, D.C. this week for the Energy and Environment Innovation Showcase. He tells us it was put on by the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee as a way to learn about ways to reduce emissions.

“Climate change is real,” Upton said. “The way we are going to get out of it is technological advancements, and we wanted to showcase what countries around the country are doing to reduce emissions.”

Upton says the WMU team showed off a lithium ion battery project aiming to increase the power of those batteries and reduce their size.

“For Western Michigan University, they did get some federal money to do this and so they were excited to showcase what they were up to. This provides the hope that we all want to see happen as we battle climate change.”

Upton says DTE Energy also talked about a technology to get power out of methane produced by dairy farms. WMU’s Dr. Qingliu Wu led the university’s presentation at the showcase on Monday.
