High winds are causing more than shoreline erosion around southwest Michigan today. Indiana Michigan Power is dealing with more than 13,000 outages in Michigan as of late afternoon. Many are smaller and scattered around Berrien County, but one outage of around 10,000 customers in southern Berrien County is  due to a tree falling on to a high voltage power line. I&M spokesperson Schnee Garrett tells WSJM News those lines often connect to substations. She had an advisory about downed power lines for customers.

“We encourage all of our customers to stay as far away from them as they possibly can and to report any hazards,” Garrett said. “Also be aware if there is a power outage, there is a possibility that traffic lights may not be functioning and to take caution if first responders are there directing traffic.”

Garrett said anyone experiencing an outage should call I&M to report it. The utility expects the big outage of 10,000 customers in south Berrien County to be restored by 6:30 p.m. Monday. The rest vary.
