Upton: Leaving Syria A “Grave Mistake”

Congressman Fred Upton is among those sounding the alarm over President Trump’s decision to pull U.S. troops out of Syria. Upton told WHTC Tuesday morning the Kurds are in danger of being wiped out by Turkey with no U.S. there to deter that country.

“We don’t have that big of a presence there in Syria,” Upton said. “Even the president said last night it’s about 50 troops or so, maybe 100. But at the same time, because of their presence, they have been protecting the Kurds, who have been leaders against ISIS.”

Upton said the Kurds have thousands of ISIS fighters in a prison within their territory. Not only does that spell trouble, but he says they are in danger themselves.

“It just opens them up, and some reports are Turkey will be attacking them within 12 to 24 hours from now, so it’s a grave mistake.”

Upton says that’s why leaders like Liz Cheney, Lindsey Graham, and Mitch McConnell “are just aghast at this surprise move.” He says the U.S. leaving Syria puts a dagger in the back of the Kurds.
