Flooding Causes Issues In SJ Township

Berrien County has been hit with more flooding in some areas due to steady rain on Thursday. St. Joseph Township Manager Denise Cook tells WSJM News the township offices fielded a wave of calls about flooding throughout the day. She notes the worst of it was around the area of Manitou Road. A township police officer did what he could to help the residents affected.

“They had three to five inches of rain in their street,” Cook said. “One of our officers arrived over there in the afternoon, probably around 1 p.m. He saw all of the flooding there, and he spent quite a bit of time out there clearing the top of the storm drains.”

Cook tells us it is unusual for a police officer to be doing work that would normal fall on the road department or drain commission. She says the township is concerned for everyone’s safety and welcomes those affected by flooding to give them a call. We’ve spoken to one resident on Manitou Road who told us the water came right up to her door and then thankfully stopped. However, her neighbors weren’t so lucky. As of Friday afternoon, the woman was still trying to reach the drain commission.
