Michigan GOP Files Complaint Regarding Whitmer Ads

A campaign finance complaint has been filed against against a Washington D.C. non-profit corporation for advertisements supporting Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gretchen Whitmer. Michigan Republican Party spokeswoman Sarah Anderson says the group “Build a Better Michigan” is behind the ads.

“There are two possible violations,” Anderson said. “Build a Better Michigan either made an illegal corporate contribution to the Whitmer for Governor campaign, or it’s an independent expenditure that must be reported to the Michigan Secretary of State within 10 days of the initial expenditure. We’re past that window from that first commercial, and neither of those things have been reported or done.”

Whitmer’s supporters say it’s perfectly legal for the ads to feature her discussing key issues facing Michigan, because of her experience as the former state Senate Minority Leader.
