MI Veterans Affairs Agency Urges Veterans To Get Mental Health Screenings

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency is trying to spread the word about an online screening tool it now offers. Agency strategy analyst Jeff Cassidy says the number of veterans in the state has jumped sharply since 9/11, and many of those who come home struggling with mental health issues often are reluctant to seek help.

“It’s usually anxiety or post-traumatic stress,” Cassidy told WSJM. “Post-traumatic stress is the result of an ordinary person being involved in an extraordinary circumstance, whatever that may be.”

Cassidy says a perceived stigma is the biggest barrier to many when it comes to getting help. However, he does say there’s been progress in convincing more vets to come forward when they struggle. The Veterans Affairs Agency’s online mental health screening tool also offers information on where to get additional help. You can find it here.
