Michigan 101, Howard 80 – Morez Johnson Jr. and top-seeded Michigan roll past Howard 101-81
Morez Johnson Jr. had 21 points and 10 rebounds on a perfect shooting night, and No. 1 seed Michigan rode a second-half surge to a 101-81 victory over 16th-seeded Howard in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Towering center Aday Mara had 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Wolverines. Johnson shot 8 of 8 from the field as Michigan won its 32nd game, one short of the program record set in 2017-18. Michigan will play Saint Louis in the Midwest Region’s second round. Cam Gillus and Bryce Harris scored 21 points each for Howard.

MSU 92, NDSU 67 – Carson Cooper’s 20 points, 10 rebounds power Michigan State to 92-67 win
Carson Cooper matched his career high with 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Michigan State routed North Dakota State 92-67 to reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the 22nd time in 28 consecutive appearances under coach Tom Izzo. Coen Carr added 17 points for the third-seeded Spartans. Cam Ward scored 13 points and Kaxon Kohler had 12 points and nine rebounds. Leading scorer Jeremy Fears Jr. managed only seven points but finished with 11 assists, exceeding his season average of 9.2 that ranks first in the country. Michigan State (26-7) advances to play Louisville (24-10) in the second round Saturday after the No. 6 seed in the Midwest held on to beat South Florida 83-79.

Jalen Duren had 24 points and 11 rebounds and the Detroit Pistons never trailed in a 117-95 victory over the Washington Wizards, their first game since All-Star guard Cade Cunningham was ruled out for at least two weeks with a collapsed left lung. Paul Reed added 17 points, while Duncan Robinson, Caris LeVert and Kevin Huerter each had 14 for the Pistons. Tristan Vukcevic scored 21 for the Wizards, who lost their season worst-tying 14th consecutive game. Detroit outrebounded Washington 55-33 and led 66-26 in points in the paint.

Cavaliers 115, Bulls 110 – James Harden scores 36 as Cavaliers hang on to beat Bulls 115-110
James Harden scored 36, Evan Mobley added 26 points and 14 rebounds and Cleveland hung on to beat the Chicago Bulls 115-110 even though Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell missed the game because of a bruised left eye. Harden nailed seven 3-pointers. Jaylon Tyson chipped in with 18 points and 11 rebounds, and the Cavaliers hung on after a 29-point lead in the third quarter dwindled to one in the game’s closing minutes. Mitchell was hurt in a collision in practice with Mobley. Tre Jones scored 20 for Chicago.

NBA – Pistons guard Cade Cunningham has collapsed lung, will be evaluated in 2 weeks
All-Star guard Cade Cunningham of the Eastern Conference-leading Detroit Pistons has a collapsed lung and is expected to miss at least two weeks and possibly more. The team announced the diagnosis Thursday. The Pistons listed Cunningham as out for Thursday’s game in Washington with a left back contusion. Cunningham got hurt in Tuesday’s win over Washington, leaving midway through the opening quarter with what the team called back spasms. Cunningham is averaging 24.5 points and 9.9 assists for the Pistons.

Alex DeBrincat scored the go-ahead goal with 3:25 remaining and assisted on Detroit’s two other goals, lifting the Red Wings to a 3-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens. DeBrincat scored the winner on a backhander after stealing the puck from defenseman Mike Matheson in the Canadiens’ zone. J.T. Compher scored earlier in the period and Andrew Copp added an empty-net goal with 16.8 seconds remaining. John Gibson made 32 saves for the Red Wings. Juraj Slafkovsky scored the Canadiens’ goal on a second-period power play. Cole Caufield, who scored his 40th goal to beat Boston on overtime on Tuesday, assisted and Jakub Dobes made 25 saves.

Blackhawks 2, Wild 1 – Bedard scores, Blackhawks hang for first win over Wild in seven years
Connor Bedard scored a goal and defenseman Alex Vlasic made a game-saving stop as time ran out as the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Minnesota Wild 2-1 to snap the NHL’s longest active point streak for one team against another. Ilya Mikheyev also scored and Spencer Knight made 28 saves for the Blackhawks, who were 0-18-1 in their last 19 games against Minnesota. Chicago’s last victory over the Wild was on Dec. 15, 2019. Nico Sturm scored for the Wild and Jesper Wallstedt stopped 24 shots.
