President Trump has warned he may prevent the Gordie Howe International Bridge from Detroit to Windsor, Ontario from opening, even as it is set to become the newest border link between the U.S. and Canada this year.
On Truth Social, Trump wrote, “I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, Canada treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve.”
Trump goes on to say that Canada has treated the U.S. “very unfairly for decades.” He complains that Canada will own the bridge, adding the United States “should own, perhaps, at least one half of this asset.” Canada is paying the entire $6.4 billion cost of building the bridge, although the bridge will be jointly owned by Canada and the state of Michigan.
Construction of the bridge began in 2018.
