Emergency Shelter Services in Benton Harbor is gearing up for one of its newest and biggest fundraisers.
The Coldest Night of the Year walk will be Saturday, February 28 to raise money for those experiencing homelessness and hunger. Emergency Shelter Services Board Vice President Sarah Eades tells us this is their second annual Coldest Night of the Year, held in conjunction with organizations throughout the United States.
“We do a 5K and a 2K walk,” Eades said. “It’s a family event where we put ourselves in the shoes of an individual who is hurt, hungry, or homeless. And we walk a 5K or a 2K sort of in solidarity, but also in recognition of the gift that we have, that we have a place to go.”
Eades says the walk will support the shelter operated by Emergency Shelter Services, the only shelter for women and children in Berrien County. It includes 28 beds that are often full at a time when the need is great.
“We’re obviously in a situation where federal funding is not a guarantee as it has been in the past, so we’re really looking for direct donors and our community to keep the lights on, to keep things running.”
Eades says last year’s event attracted 92 walkers who raised nearly $20,000. They’re aiming higher this year, with the goal set at $40,000.
The walk will begin and end at The Secret Garden in Benton Harbor, and participants will also take part in a celebration at the finish line. Adults who raise $150 and youth who raise $75 will receive the official Coldest Night of the Year winter hat.
