Congressman Bill Huizenga says Harbor Towers in Benton Harbor is on track to receive long-awaited federal funding for major renovations, following a commitment from Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner.
Huizenga tells us he’s been seeking support for improvements at the high rise ever since taking a tour of the facility himself in 2024.
“It’s in extremely rough shape, and we were told that it had been cleaned up for our visit, and that was hugely problematic,” Huizenga said. “And so we’ve been pushing and working with the last administration and now this administration.”
Huizenga says during a recent House Financial Services Committee hearing, Turner confirmed that funding for the troubled housing complex is expected to close in March.
“I also asked them, frankly, to come and visit. I want them to come and see the situation, and not just in Harbor Towers and in Benton Harbor, but in and around southwest Michigan. I think it would be a very helpful visit.”
Harbor Towers residents have complained for years about poor conditions, including lack of heat and hot water, as well as safety concerns.
Huizenga says Turner pledged HUD’s cooperation, saying the agency will work with him to ensure residents receive safe, quality housing while responsibly managing taxpayer dollars.
