Berrien County Sheriff’s Department gearing up for next Polar Plunge

It’s almost time for the next Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge in Berrien County.

Sheriff Chuck Heit tells us the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department is proud to organize the event to raise money for the Special Olympics in Michigan, inviting everyone to take a dip in the icy water.

It’s a great opportunity for all they do for the athletes throughout the year and helping there,” Heit said. “It’s just a great opportunity for us to give back. So we’ve done it for several years now.”

This year’s Polar Plunge will be February 7 at Watermark Brewing Company in Stevensville starting at 10 a.m. Heit himself will take the plunge, and has in the past. So, what’s it like?

The water’s always cold, but we’ve had some years during COVID when we had to do it virtual. So we actually partnered with the New Buffalo Township Fire [Department] and cut a hole in the ice. So a lot of it depends on the temperature, though, and the weather. But it’s only cold for a little bit and it’s worth it for who we’re raising the money for.”

Heit says anyone can sign up for the plunge, but those who are too chicken to try it are also invited to make a donation in support. The sheriff’s department’s goal for this year’s plunge is $105,000, and it’s already off to a good start.
