
Mary’s life began October 5, 1940, in Niles, Michigan. She grew up in Niles where she graduated high school. Mary continued her education becoming a registered nurse. She started her nursing career in Paw Paw as a floor nurse. Mary then went to work for many years at Watervliet Community Hospital in the emergency room, usually choosing to work the midnight shift. Outside of work she enjoyed unwinding with a good book, knitting, crocheting, sewing or just enjoying the outdoors. Mary also loved serving her church family, she was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Hartford where she sent the monthly cards to elders, birthdays, and anniversaries.
Mary’s greatest joy was spending time with her family. Her loving family she leaves behind to cherish her memory includes: three children Don Schock, Brenda Schock, and Teri Mumaugh; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; three sisters Catherine (John) Wirick, Annette Ward, and Mary Ann (Jerry) Ford; and many nieces and nephews.
Mary died Thursday, January 8, 2026, at home surrounded by her family. She is preceded in death by: her husband David Ulrath; three children David Ulrath, Kerry Ulrath, and Renea Schock; three siblings Shirley Wirick, Flora Bowerman, and William Herman; and her parents William and Mary Alice (Yales) Herman.
Mary’s life will be celebrated Monday, January 12, 2026, with visitation at 11:00 AM followed by funeral services at 12:00 PM, at Hutchins Funeral Home in Watervliet, Michigan. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery in Hartford, Michigan. Memorials many be made in Mary’s name to a veteran organization of the donor’s choice. You are invited to leave a message of comfort for Mary’s family.
