Lake Michigan College is inviting the whole community to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at its annual MLK Community Breakfast on Monday, January 19.
The free community event will bring together students, leaders, and the community to honor Dr. King’s vision and explore this year’s theme, “Steps Toward the Dream.”
Charmae Sanders is the Director of Start to Finish at LMC. She tells us the college is committed to keeping the memory of King’s lesson alive.
“He’s one of our country’s great heroes, and I think it’s important that we honor him every year,” Sanders said. “And I think it’s a wonderful thing that LMC does each year to just show appreciation for what Dr. King did and also for how this country has grown because of him.”
The Community Breakfast will feature performances by the All God’s Children Choir and the LMC Choir. Sanders says they’ll also have two exceptional student speakers, Olivia Sturgis from Benton Harbor High School and Gianna McLellan from St. Joseph High School.
“What I did was reach out to the principals of both schools and I asked them if they could recommend a student for me. And so the principals worked with their guidance staff and other staff in their high schools to pick a student who they thought lived up to the spirit and legacy of Dr. King.”
The keynote speaker will be James Gunter, the director of Present Pillars, an organization that advocates for and helps fathers in Benton Harbor. The winners of the Spirit of MLK Spotlight Award will also be announced at the breakfast.
Sanders says the celebration will continue the next day with a screening of the documentary, 13th, at 6:30 p.m. The film screening will be open to the public, while tickets are now available for the breakfast online.
