A doctor for the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians has received the 2025 Outstanding Physician Award from the Indiana University School of Medicine in South Bend for his work serving the citizens of the tribal nation and the surrounding community.
The Pokagons say Dr. Gerald “Jerry” Morris is the medical director of Pokagon Health Services, serves as an adjunct clinical assistant professor of Family Medicine at the university, and teaches resident physicians in the Memorial Family Residence Program. He received his award at a ceremony held at the school’s annual Medicine Ball fundraiser.
Pokagon Band Tribal Chair Matthew Wesaw says Morris is a “true inspiration to all who work in the service of others.”
The Pokagons say under the leadership and clinical care of Morris, the tribal health clinic has experienced growth on many fronts and continues to expand its services and partnerships.
Dr. Morris earned his medical degree from IUSM-SB in 2010, where he was one of two students who helped pilot the expansion of third and fourth year clinical rotations in South Bend. He says his award “reflects not just my work, but the strength of the community that trains, teaches, and supports its physicians.”
