Lakeshore High School announced Wednesday that Danny Thompson has stepped down as varsity football coach after five seasons leading the Lakeshore Lancers. Thompson will remain with the school in his role as dean of students.

Thompson compiled a 22–28 overall record during his five-year tenure and led the Lancers to postseason play in three seasons. Beyond on-field results, the school credited Thompson with expanding student involvement through the creation of a Manager Program, which gave students opportunities to take on leadership roles and support the team behind the scenes.

The school also said Thompson introduced several community-focused initiatives during his time as coach, including Program Day and themed events such as Salute to Service, Educators Day, Local First Responders Day and Special Friends Day. School officials said the events helped strengthen connections among students and families across the district’s Rocket, Middle School and High School programs.

In a statement, Thompson expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the program and said he believes stepping aside is the best move for the future of the team. He said he plans to continue supporting Lakeshore students and assist with the transition to a new head coach.

Athletic Director Greg Younger praised Thompson’s leadership and commitment to student-athletes, saying he led the program with integrity and pride.

The school said a search for a new varsity football coach will begin immediately.
