In recognition of World AIDS Day, the Berrien County Health Department is encouraging everyone to check out its HIV prevention, testing, and education services.

Berrien County is among the top ten counties in Michigan for HIV infections. Emma Yazel is an STD and HIV community health worker at the health department and tells us anyone who’s sexually active should be getting tested every three to six months.

We offer rapid HIV testing, which at the Berrien County Health Department, you can know your results in about 20 minutes,” Yazel said.

Yazel says those who use injection drugs are also advised to get tested frequently.

Most health insurance policies will cover the testing, and Yazel says the health department will never turn anyone away due to an inability to pay. She also notes there have been major advances in HIV treatment in recent decades, meaning identifying a case early can lead to better outcomes.

If you get into treatment and stay on top of taking your meds as prescribed by your doctor or physician, there’s a chance that you don’t get AIDS, that you just live with HIV.”

Appointments for HIV services are available at the Berrien County Health Department Mondays through Thursdays at both the Benton Harbor and Niles locations. You can learn more right here.
