More than 40 students from Andrews University fanned out across Benton Harbor on Sunday for the second annual Show Love Here Day, a citywide initiative dedicated to service and compassion.

Andrews University student Nicholas Gunn tells us the effort was started last year by fellow student and friend, Katy Pierre, to help build meaningful bridges between the university and Benton Harbor residents. So, what kinds of things did the volunteers do on Sunday?

We were able to have multiple different students from the university go out into the community and volunteer at several different service projects, including raking leaves, volunteering at community club, and also volunteering at salvation army,” Gunn said.

Gunn says it was a rewarding experience to get out into neighborhoods.

I thought it was just a great opportunity just to go out and show love. And the scripture tells us that beloved of God so loved us that we ought to love one another.”

Following the day of service, the volunteers and residents held a Community Chapel at the Benton Harbor Salvation Army.

Last year’s Show Love Here Day served more than 600 people as Gunn says Andrews University seeks to grow a relationship with Benton Harbor rooted in service, empathy, community engagement, and love.
