Lake Michigan College is planning a two-day Speaker Series on Global Perspectives for this month as part of International Education Week.

Amy Scrima is chair of the LMC Internationalization Committee and tells us there is a large international student population at the college, thanks to nearby Andrews University and Whirlpool.

The speaker series will kick off on Wednesday, November 19 with “The Benefits of Multiple Perspectives: Lessons from International Experts.”

We’re going to have a really great conversation with a couple of international experts on the part that nonverbal language, nonverbal communication plays in our overall communication,” Scrima said.

The guest speakers will be Shahid Akhtar, an international marketing consultant, and Mehmet Çelikyay, a Turkish TV host.

Scrima says the next day will bring “Pan Africanism: Different Voices, Similar Goals Across Africa.”

We have many countries represented in our international student population here at LMC from countries in Africa, and so it will be a relevant, compelling conversation.”

The guest speakers will be Dominique Somda, an assistant professor of anthropology at Kalamazoo College, and Alhaji N’jai, the director of GHI One Health Center-West Africa. They’ll explore how diverse voices across the African continent unite around shared goals and visions.

Scrima says the sessions will be held in-person with a Zoom component so anyone can attend. Each will start at 10 a.m. to encourage student attendance.
