Michigan 121, Oakland 78 – Michigan scores school-record 69 points in 1st half, in 121-78 win over Oakland
Morez Johnson Jr. scored 20 of his career-high 24 points in a record-breaking first half and preseason All-America forward Yaxel Lendeborg finished with 12 points to help No. 7 Michigan rout Oakland 121-78 on Monday night. The Wolverines had 69 points at halftime, breaking the first-half scoring record of 66 set in 1987 against Eastern Michigan. They showed some mercy in the second half, allowing the school’s single-game scoring record to stand at 128 points from 1966 against Purdue. Michigan finished in a tie for the fifth-highest total in program history.

MSU 80, Colgate 69 – Kohler scores 16 points in No. 22 Michigan State’s 80-69 win over Colgate
Jaxon Kohler scored 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and Jeremy Fears Jr. added 14 points and 10 assists Monday night to lead No. 22 Michigan State to an 80-69 victory over Colgate in the season-opener for both schools. Coen Carr also had 12 points for the Spartans, who improved to 23-8 in openers under coach Tom Izzo. Sam Wright scored 17 points and Andrew Alekseyenko added 14 for the Raiders (0-1). Jalen Cox also had 12 points and eight rebounds for Colgate which led only once when Alekseyenko hit a 3-pointer on the first shot of the game.

ND 89, LIU 67 – Markus Burton scores 24, Cole Certa has career-high 22, and Notre Dame tops LIU 89-67
Markus Burton scored 24 points, Cole Certa added a career-high 22 off the bench, and Notre Dame opened the season with an 89-67 victory over Long Island University. Certa, a sophomore, had only one double-digit game last season, scoring 12 points in a game against Pittsburgh. The Fighting Irish led 74-60 with five minutes remaining in the game before Burton and Ryder Frost scored 13 of their team’s final 15 points. Frost, a freshman, finished with 15 points off the bench. Northern Arizona transfer Carson Towt had 19 rebounds, tying his career high. LIU got 12 points each from Mason Porter-Brown and Jamal Fuller.

WMU 76, CCU 71 – Griffith scores 15, Western Michigan knocks off Coastal Carolina 76-71
Jalen Griffith scored 15 points as Western Michigan beat Coastal Carolina 76-71 on Monday. Griffith shot 5 of 10 from the field, including 0 for 3 from 3-point range, and went 5 for 6 from the line for the Broncos. Max Burton added 14 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Trey Lewis also had 14 points. Rasheed Jones finished with 21 points and six rebounds for the Chanticleers. Coastal Carolina also got 21 points, four assists and three steals from Josh Beadle. AJ Dancier finished with 18 points and five steals.

CMU 82, App State 66 – Adley’s 22 lead Central Michigan over Appalachian State 82-66
Tamario Adley scored 22 points as Central Michigan beat Appalachian State 82-66 on Monday night in a season-opener for both teams. Adley also had seven rebounds for the Chippewas. Logan McIntire scored 14 points while going 4 of 6 (4 for 5 from 3-point range) and added six rebounds. Keenan Garner had nine points and went 4 of 6 from the field. Kasen Jennings finished with 21 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Mountaineers. Alonzo Dodd added 11 points for Appalachian State. Luke Wilson finished with nine points.

EMU 71, GA State 49 – Habhab’s double-double leads Eastern Michigan in 71-49 victory over Georgia State
Mohammad Habhab scored 15 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as Eastern Michigan beat Georgia State 71-49 in a season opener on Monday. Carlos Hart scored 14 points and added eight rebounds for the Eagles. Mak Manciel finished with 12 points. Jelani Hamilton led the way for the Panthers with 13 points. Joah Chappelle had six points and seven rebounds.

Jacoby Brissett threw for two touchdowns and ran for a score filling in again for Kyler Murray, and the Arizona Cardinals stopped a five-game losing streak with a 27-17 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. Brissett made his third consecutive start after the week began with expectations of Murray returning from a foot injury coming off the team’s open week. Instead, the Cardinals pivoted to Brissett. Arizona won for just the second time in the past 18 games when Murray didn’t take at least five snaps or sat out entirely. The Cowboys couldn’t build on the momentum of Sam Williams’ blocked punt that was recovered in the end zone by Marshawn Kneeland.

Matty Beniers and Jordan Eberle each had a goal and an assist as the Seattle Kraken beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-1 on Monday night. Jamie Oleksiak also scored for Seattle, and Joey Daccord finished with 29 saves. Andre Burakovsky scored for Chicago and Arvid Soderblom stopped 21 shots.

Pistons 114, Grizzlies 106 – Pistons build halftime lead, withstand rally in Morant’s Grizzlies return
Cade Cunningham scored 19 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter and the Detroit Pistons held off the Memphis Grizzlies 114-106 on Monday night. As the Grizzlies cut into Detroit’s lead in the fourth quarter, Cunningham scored nine straight points for the Pistons to thwart the rally. Isaiah Stewart added 26 points and 14 rebounds, and Jalen Duren and Ron Holland II had 14 points each. Jaren Jackson Jr. led Memphis with 21 points, and Ja Morant had 18 points and 10 assists. The game was Morant’s first since a one-game suspension for acts detrimental to the team after the Grizzlies’ Friday night loss to the Lakers. He served the penalty in Memphis’ loss to Toronto on Sunday.

Bucks 117, Pacers 115 – Giannis hits buzzer-beater to send Bucks past Pacers 117-115 in Turner’s Indy return
Giannis Antetokounmpo made a 17-foot buzzer-beating jumper to give the Milwaukee Bucks a 117-115 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Monday night. Antetokounmpo had 33 points, 13 rebounds and five assists on a night he went 14 of 21 from the field. Kyle Kuzma added 15 points to help the Bucks win for the third time in four games., taking the first of four scheduled regular season matchups against a Central Division rival it has faced 22 times since the start of the 2023-24 season. This time, though, longtime Pacers center Myles Turner was dressed in a Bucks jersey after signing a free-agent deal in July. Turner had nine points, seven rebounds and five blocks. Pascal Siakam led Indiana with 32 points and eight assists.

MLB – Dodgers celebrate historic back-to-back World Series titles
Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their second consecutive World Series championship with a parade downtown. It was the first back-to-back win for any team in 25 years. Ohtani, joined by his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, says he’s already looking forward to a third straight title. Manager Dave Roberts held the Commissioner’s Trophy as buses filled with players and family members passed cheering fans. World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto waved to fans. Kiké Hernández captured it all on camera, praising fans for their unwavering support throughout the season.
