US-131 wrong-way crash kills three in Allegan County

Three people are dead and three others critically injured after a wrong-way crash early Sunday morning on U.S. 131 in Allegan County.

The sheriff’s office says deputies and Gun Lake Tribal Police were called just after the report of a vehicle traveling south in the northbound lanes near 129th Avenue in Wayland Township.

The sheriff’s office says an officer tried to catch up with the driver, but the car collided head-on with another vehicle near the 57-mile marker in Martin Township.

The female driver of the wrong-way vehicle and two men in the other car were pronounced dead at the scene. Three additional passengers suffered life-threatening injuries.

Names of those involved have not yet been released. The Allegan County Sheriff’s Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating, and it’s not yet known if alcohol was a factor.

U.S. 131 was closed for several hours.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by several local police, fire, and EMS agencies.
