Clerk offers advice for Election Day next week

With an election on Tuesday, Berrien County Clerk Stacy Loar-Porter has some tips for people looking to have their say.

Loar-Porter tells us it’s still not too late to get an absentee ballot. Although you can technically request one by mail, it’s not going to arrive on time at this point.

My suggestion would be if you still need an absentee ballot to go to your local clerk’s office, they can give you one over the counter until Monday at 4 p .m. Most have weekend hours this weekend. They’re either open Saturday or Sunday. Some are open both,” Loar-Porter said.

Note that each voter has to pick up their own absentee ballot. You can’t ask your spouse to pick it up for you.

For those looking to vote in-person on Election Day, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

So bring a picture ID if you have it. If you don’t have one, you can bring other forms of ID. We also have the option for being able to fill out an oath that says you are who you say you are. But ideally, the quickest, easiest way is to bring a picture photo ID.”

Loar-Porter says there’s no in-person early voting this election because that’s only done in Michigan for state and federal elections. She’s hoping to see a good turnout with some big questions on the ballot in Berrien County.

You can watch for election results after the polls close at the Berrien County website. We’ll also be reporting them late Tuesday or early Wednesday on our website.
