Huizenga: real life effects of government shutdown being felt; time to end it

The government shutdown is now in its 28th day as federal workers are experiencing payless paydays and key social services dry up.

Is either side in Washington showing signs of cracking? Congressman Bill Huizenga tells us this is about the time that should happen as the real-world effects of a continuing shutdown are being felt.

By November 1, SNAP and WIC, those are the two food assistance programs that go to some of the most vulnerable folks in society,” Huizenga said. “They’re not going to be able to be funded.”

Huizenga says Senate Democrats are to blame for playing politics. But he says it’s time for them to agree to a continuing spending resolution.

This is getting very real, very quickly, and it’s time it ends. And we’ve talked about before, this is an entirely avoidable situation. Entirely avoidable.”

Huizenga says the largest union representing federal workers has now said it’s time for the Senate to pass the continuing resolution.

Meanwhile, Huizenga tells us there can absolutely be negotiations over Affordable Care Act subsidies once the government is back open. But he says Republicans aren’t going to negotiate something so large during a shutdown.
