Notre Dame Freshman Quarterback CJ Carr Named to Manning Award Watch List

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame freshman quarterback CJ Carr has been named to the Manning Award Watch List, which honors the nation’s top quarterback.

Carr has completed 121 passes for 1,758 yards and 14 touchdowns through seven games this season, and he has rushed for two additional scores. He ranks fifth nationally in passing yards per completion at 14.53, eighth in yards per attempt at 9.55 and 11th in passing efficiency at 166.8. He leads all FBS freshman quarterbacks in each category.

Carr was previously named the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week and earned recognition as the Shaun Alexander Award Freshman of the Week following Notre Dame’s win over Arkansas. He was also selected to the Davey O’Brien Award’s Great 8 list.


College Football Slate Includes Michigan-Michigan State Rivalry

This weekend’s college football schedule includes several regional matchups:

• No. 2 Indiana hosts UCLA at noon on FOX, as the Hoosiers aim to remain unbeaten against a Bruins squad on a three-game winning streak under interim coach Tim Skipper.
• Purdue hosts Rutgers at noon on BTN.
• No. 25 Michigan visits Michigan State at 7:30 p.m. on NBC. Coverage in Southwest Michigan includes the Michigan broadcast on WSJM beginning at 6 p.m. and the Michigan State broadcast on Cosy Classic Hits 103.7 beginning at 6:30 p.m.
• Eastern Michigan hosts Ohio at noon on CBS Sports Network.
• UMass visits Central Michigan.
• Western Michigan travels to Miami (Ohio).


Notre Dame Men Host DePaul in Preseason Exhibition

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame will host DePaul on Friday night in its final preseason exhibition at Purcell Pavilion.

The game marks the return of the former Big East rivalry to South Bend for the first time since Nov. 24, 2018, when Notre Dame defeated DePaul 95-70. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.

It will be the debut of Notre Dame’s highest-rated modern recruiting class, led by McDonald’s All-American Jalen Haralson. The group, which includes Tommy Ahneman, Ryder Frost and Brady Koehler, is ranked fourth nationally by 247Sports, fifth by ESPN and Rivals and sixth by On3. It is rated the top class in Indiana and second overall in the ACC.

The exhibition will not be streamed. Radio coverage begins at 5:30 p.m. on Sports Radio WSBT.


NBA Figures Arrested in Illegal Betting and Poker Scheme Investigations

Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and former Cleveland Cavaliers player and assistant coach Damon Jones were among 34 people arrested in two investigations involving illegal sports betting and rigged underground poker games.

Authorities said the probe covered 11 states and involved tens of millions of dollars. Rozier is accused of participating in an illegal sports betting operation using insider NBA information. Billups faces charges related to alleged Mafia-backed attempts to rig poker games. Jones is accused of selling inside information to bettors.


Gilgeous-Alexander Scores 55 in Double-OT Win Over Pacers

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander recorded a career-high 55 points for the Oklahoma City Thunder in a 141-135 double-overtime victory over the Indiana Pacers on Thursday night.

He scored 15 points after regulation and finished 23 of 26 at the free throw line while adding eight rebounds and five assists. The game featured 70 fouls and a technical against Pacers coach Rick Carlisle.


Curry Lifts Warriors Past Nuggets After Gordon Scores 50

Stephen Curry scored 16 straight points late in regulation and into overtime as the Golden State Warriors defeated the Denver Nuggets 137-131 on Thursday night.

Curry hit a tying 3-pointer before Golden State pulled ahead despite a 50-point performance from Denver’s Aaron Gordon. Gordon’s effort marked the seventh 50-point season opener in NBA history and tied a record with 10 made 3-pointers.


Donato Scores Twice as Blackhawks Beat Lightning

Ryan Donato scored two goals to lead the Chicago Blackhawks to a 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night. Donato has five goals across a four-game scoring streak, following a career-high 31 goals last season.

Frank Nazar added a goal and an assist as Chicago won for the fourth time in five games.


Islanders Top Red Wings with Seven-Goal Effort

Emil Heineman scored twice as the New York Islanders defeated the Detroit Red Wings 7-2 on Thursday night. Tony DeAngelo, Mathew Barzal and Simon Holmstrom each contributed a goal and an assist.

Dylan Larkin and Jonatan Berggren scored for Detroit, which dropped its second straight game.


Herbert Leads Chargers to Win Over Vikings

Justin Herbert threw for 227 yards and three touchdowns in the Los Angeles Chargers’ 37-10 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night.

The Chargers improved to 5-3 following losses in three of their previous four games. Minnesota fell to 3-4 after dropping consecutive games for the first time this season.

In other Week 8 matchups:
• The Chicago Bears visit the Baltimore Ravens at 1 p.m. Sunday, seeking a fifth straight win.
• The Indianapolis Colts host the Tennessee Titans at 4:25 p.m., with coverage beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Sports Radio WSBT.
• The Detroit Lions, along with the Raiders, Rams, Cardinals, Seahawks and Jaguars, have a bye week.


Yesavage to Start World Series Opener for Blue Jays

Toronto rookie Trey Yesavage will start Game 1 of the World Series against the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night.

Yesavage debuted on Sept. 15 and has three regular-season starts along with three postseason starts. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he will become only the second pitcher to start a World Series game with more postseason starts than regular-season appearances. Blake Snell will start for Los Angeles.

Toronto has not named a Game 2 starter, while the Dodgers plan to start Yoshinobu Yamamoto. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m. both Friday and Saturday on FOX.
