Now on display at the South Haven Center for the Arts is this year’s juried exhibition, “The Ghosts that Linger.”

Center Director Kerry Hagy tells us that as the organization explores the idea of resources this year, it reached out to Detroit artist Shaina Kasztelan, who works with recycled materials, to put together a theme for the display.

“She works for an estate company that does estate sales,” Hagy said. “So that’s part of how she gets connected to all of these objects and things that are essentially going to be put in the trash, but that at one point meant something to people.”

Kasztelan’s idea was to create an exhibition of art made from items that once meant something to someone, but otherwise could have wound up in the trash.

The South Haven Center for the Arts received more than 150 submissions from artists all over the country for The Ghosts that Linger, and Kasztelan narrowed them down.

She selected the 36 that are exhibited at the South Haven Center for the Arts that explore these themes of objects and places and the way that they become filled with meaning that we kind of put onto them.”

For example, the exhibition features little chairs made out of discarded materials and a screen print made from refurbished fabric.

The Ghosts That Linger is now open for viewing Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with extended hours until 6 p.m. on Thursdays. The exhibition runs through November 8.
