Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed her seventh state budget into law.

Whitmer on Tuesday took to social media to celebrate the official closing of the budgeting process, which this year was more contentious than usual. She said the new budget includes plenty for all Michiganders.

Safer, smoother roads to drive on, thanks to the biggest roads deal in Michigan history, so we can keep fixing all those damn roads, state and local, and keep your car in good shape too,” Whitmer said. “It means thousands back in your pockets with tax breaks for seniors and working families. We’re rolling back the retirement tax, continuing the Working Families Tax Credit, and getting rid of tax on tips, overtime, and Social Security.”

State lawmakers deadlocked on the budget well past their usual deadline of July 1, taking the impasse all the way to the brink of a government shutdown. That was barely averted with a continuing resolution that funded the state for a week while the final budget deal was put to paper for a vote to take place.

Whitmer says this budget puts a record amount into per-pupil funding for schools while continuing her pet program of free lunch and breakfast for all students.
