Lake Michigan College is celebrating the completion of renovations to its welding lab in the Hanson Technology Center.

The college held an open house Friday to show off the $1.8 million in work that’s been done to rebuild the facility. LMC Dean of Workforce Development David Krueger tells us a huge part of the work was the replacement of the lab’s ventilation system.

Back when they first created a lot of welding labs, the ventilation that they used wasn’t as good,” Kreuger said. “It didn’t draw out all the particulates out of the air. So this is one of the things, brand new booths that actually have individual systems that take air out.”

With those new booths, a lot of space has been saved, leaving a better looking lab. Krueger says all of this had to be done during part of the summer when students weren’t in training.

We were doing welding training through June and then about the middle of June actually, our faculty cleaned all the stuff out of the lab and a company came in and they started work and we were able to get it completely finished around June 15 through the 20th of August.”

Krueger says all classes in the LMC welding program are now full, and the lab also hosts apprenticeship programs.

Krueger led several tours of the facility, and of the entire Hanson Tech Center, Friday. He says there was plenty of interest as there’s plenty of interest in welding, in general.
