State Senator Aric Nesbitt’s campaign for governor has received a boost thanks to a poll taken this past weekend at a key Republican event.

Nesbitt came out on top in the Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference straw poll.

The biennial conference attracted Republican leaders from across the state, including several candidates for governor. They held a forum at the conference, and when the straw poll was conducted, Nesbitt led with 29.2% of the votes. Second was former House Speaker Tom Leonard, with 23.5%, followed by former Attorney General Mike Cox at 18.5% and Congressman John James at 14%.

A total of 500 registered attendees were at the conference. John James wasn’t among them.

After the straw poll’s results were released, Nesbitt issued a statement saying, “What we saw on the Island reflects what we’ve felt along the campaign trail, in cities and small towns across our state.” He says he’s proud of his team.
