Lions 52, Bears 21 – Goff has 5 TDs, 3 to St. Brown, Lions bounce back with 52-21 win over Ben Johnson-led Bears
Jared Goff threw for 334 yards and matched a career high with five touchdown passes, including a career-high three scores to Amon-Ra St. Brown, to help Detroit bounce back with a 52-21 win over Chicago on Sunday. The Lions dropped the opener at Green Bay and have not lost consecutive games in the regular season over the last 2 1/2 years. The Bears turned the ball over twice in the first half, leading to a 28-14 deficit that was too large to overcome in coach Ben Johnson’s return to the city where he became an offensive coordinator. Chicago’s Caleb Williams was 19 of 30 for 207 yards with two touchdowns to Rome Odunze, a 28-yard pass to answer Detroit’s game-opening touchdown and a 6-yard throw to make it 21-14 late in the first half.  Gibbs and Montgomery combined for 151 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Colts 29, Broncos 28 – Shrader converts from 45 yards after penalty on 60-yard miss; Colts beat Broncos 29-28
Spencer Shrader made a 45-yard field goal with no time left after the Broncos were penalized for leverage on his missed 60-yard try, and the Indianapolis Colts beat Denver 29-28 for their first 2-0 start since 2009. Trailing by two with 3:15 left, the Colts played conservatively on their final drive, with Jonathan Taylor running the ball seven times and Daniel Jones throwing only one pass. Those plays netted 26 yards and set up Shrader’s attempt from midfield that missed short and right. But Dondrea Tillman was flagged for leverage — using another player to vault himself into the air to try to block the kick. The 15-yard personal-foul penalty put Indy well within Shrader’s range.

NFL – Bears fall to 0-2 under Ben Johnson as QB Williams has another uneven performance
The Chicago Bears hired Ben Johnson away from Detroit, hoping he could help Caleb Williams become a consistent quarterback and turn around a franchise that hasn’t had a winning record in several years. So far, not so good. The Detroit Lions routed Chicago 52-21 on Sunday, showing their former offensive coordinator that they’re just fine on offense without him. A week after losing an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter at home to Minnesota, the Bears never led the Lions and were dominated on both sides of the ball.

NFL – Bengals seeking opinions on Joe Burrow’s toe after injury vs. Jaguars
Joe Burrow left the Bengals’ locker room on crutches with a boot on his left foot after injuring his toe during the second quarter of Cincinnati’s 31-27 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Bengals are seeking second opinions on the injury, a person with knowledge of the situation said Sunday night. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because a final determination on Burrow’s treatment has not been made. Burrow was hurt when he was sacked by Jaguars defensive tackle Arik Armstead. He was examined in the sideline medical tent and was limping before heading to the locker room.

NFL – Falcons trample J.J. McCarthy and the Vikings 22-6
Bijan Robinson ran for 143 yards, Parker Romo made five field goals without a miss in his Falcons debut and Atlanta beat the Minnesota Vikings 22-6. The Falcons sacked J.J. McCarthy six times and forced three turnovers on Sunday night. Tyler Allgeier added 13 carries for 67 yards with a late touchdown run. The Falcons rushed 38 times for 219 yards to keep the pressure off quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and keep the crowd from being a major factor. McCarthy struggled in his second career start after rallying the Vikings past Chicago in his debut.

Golf – Scottie Scheffler warms up for Ryder Cup by winning for the 6th time this year
What had been labeled a Ryder Cup training camp for the Americans turned into another typical week for Scottie Scheffler. He shot a 67 to outlast Ryder Cup teammate Ben Griffin and win the Procore Championship for his sixth title of the year on the PGA Tour. Griffin had a good chance to force a playoff on the 18th hole at Silverado. But he three-putted from 60 feet for a par and shot 70 to finish one shot behind. Scheffler and Tiger Woods are the only players with at least six wins in consecutive season the last 40 years.

WIth the game tied at 2-2, Naylor drove an elevated sinker from Brandon Eisert over the wall in right-center for his 12th homer this season.
