Yankees 9, Tigers 3 – Judge homers twice to tie DiMaggio on Yankees list in 9-3 win over Tigers
Aaron Judge hit two home runs to tie Hall of Fame outfielder Joe DiMaggio for fourth place in Yankees history as New York beat the Detroit Tigers 9-3 to avert a three-game sweep. On the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, President Donald Trump attended the game and watched from a suite on the third base side. Judge homered off Tyler Holton in the first inning and matched DiMaggio by launching his 361st career homer with a 434-foot drive off Sawyer Gipson-Long in the third. Judge had his sixth multihomer game this season and pulled even with DiMaggio two nights after passing Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra for fifth on the franchise list.
White Sox 5, Rays 1 – Montgomery and Teel drive in 2 runs each to lead White Sox over Rays 5-1
Colson Montgomery and Kyle Teel drove in two runs each to back 5 2/3 scoreless innings from fellow rookie Shane Smith, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-1 in the rubber game of the series. Chase Meidroth led off the first with a single off Ian Seymour and Curtis Mead’s double moved him to third. Montgomery drove in both with a one-out single. Teel had a two-run pinch hit single in the sixth for a 5-0 lead, extending his on-base streak to 20 games.

NFL – Lions appear to be on shaky ground as Johnson returns to Ford Field with Bears
The Detroit Lions were favorites to win the last Super Bowl before flopping in the playoffs and are suddenly on shaky ground in the eyes of some NFL observers. Dan Campbell gets it and says the Lions have raised expectations. Detroit went into this season with questions about its rebuilt offensive line and lack of a pash rush and didn’t quiet doubts about those weaknesses in Week 1 at Green Bay. Coming off the team’s lowest-scoring performance since 2023, the Lions are facing their former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and the Chicago Bears on Sunday at Ford Field.
NFL – 49ers’ Brock Purdy ‘week to week’ with toe injury; Mac Jones expected to start
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is dealing with a toe injury and is considered "week to week." General manager John Lynch shared Thursday that the team consulted with specialists to reach this diagnosis. Purdy’s return remains uncertain, and Mac Jones will start against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. Purdy injured his toe and shoulder in the season opener against Seattle but stayed in the game to secure a win. Jones, who joined San Francisco in March, was previously linked to the team during the 2021 draft. Coach Kyle Shanahan says Purdy’s recovery is progressing, but his return date is still unknown.

NCAAFB – Early loss leaves Notre Dame with another early-season test against Texas A&M
No. 8 Notre Dame hasn’t even taken a snap on its home turf and coaches and players are already using the word urgency. Early-season losses do that to a playoff hopeful and nobody knows that better than the Fighting Irish. They lost coach Marcus Freeman’s debut in 2022, lost twice in a three-game span in 2023, and then lost 16-14 to Northern Illinois in Week 2 last season. On Saturday, Notre Dame again will attempt to put its season back on track when undefeated No. 16 Texas A&M visits South Bend. Notre Dame beat the Aggies 23-13 in last year’s season opener in College Station, Texas.

The NHL says the five players acquitted of sexual assault charges stemming from an incident in 2018 will be eligible to sign a contract Oct. 15 and play Dec. 1. The league announced the decision Thursday to reinstate Dillon Dube, Cal Foote, Alex Formenton, Carter Hart, and Michael McLeod a little over a month since a judge in London, Ontario, found them not guilty.
