Lincoln Township is seeking a state grant to help pay for a trail along South Roosevelt Road.
Congressman Tim Walberg last year helped secure a $1.5 million federal allocation for a project to build a 10-foot-wide shared use path from Hidden Pines to Marquette Woods Road. However, construction has been delayed because bids came in substantially higher than the original estimates, partly because of the need to build a bridge over Hickory Creek.
Township Supervisor Glenn Youngsetdt tells us there have been all kinds of snags in this effort.
“Last fall, last spring, we couldn’t do anything because we were going to disturb bats, and so we had to hold off,” Youngstedt said. “Then there have been a number of other issues that have held us up. And now this bridge is probably going to hold us up a little.”
Trustees this week approved a $620,000 grant application to the Michigan Department of Transportation’s Transportation Alternatives Program, or TAP, so they can give the project a boost.
Township engineer Brandon Mieras told the board the $1.5 million in federal funds must be spent by the end of September, 2027, so there is time to seek more funding.
