Berrien County Commissioner Chokwe Pitchford has been caught up in a bit of confusion over a political endorsement.

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Haley Stevens claimed this week in a now-deleted post on X that she’d been endorsed by him, but Pitchford says that’s not correct.

The X post, made by Stevens on Tuesday, was an “Endorsement Alert” with a photo of Pitchford, saying “I am truly honored to be endorsed by Commissioner Pitchford. Your work in Berrien County is inspiring.”

Pitchford then posted on X, saying “I literally never endorsed her or heard a word from her team. I promise you, I have not talked to anyone, emailed anyone about endorsements, or even hinted that I would be open to endorsing her.” He later told The Detroit News that he thinks Stevens is taking the Black vote for granted.

Meanwhile, Pitchford says he’s in “active communication” with the Senate campaigns of both Mallory McMorrow and Abdul El-Sayed.
