Athletics 7, Tigers 0 – Morales pitches 7 sharp innings and Gelof powers A’s past Tigers 7-0 for 3-game sweep
Luis Morales pitched seven sparkling innings, Zack Gelof homered, doubled and drove in four runs, and the Athletics beat the Detroit Tigers 7-0 to sweep their three-game series. Making his fourth career start, Morales allowed two hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. The 22-year-old rookie from Cuba lowered his ERA to 1.19 in five major league appearances. The AL Central-leading Tigers lost their fourth in a row and fell a half-game behind AL East-leading Toronto for the best record in the American League. Detroit starter Casey Mize permitted five runs and seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Royals 12, White Sox 1 – Perez leads Royals to 12-1 rout of White Sox; moves into 3rd place on franchise RBI list
Salvador Perez hit a leadoff homer and a two-run double in Kansas City’s eight-run fifth inning as the Royals pummeled the Chicago White Sox 12-1. Perez’s double gave him 993 RBIs — one more than Amos Otis for third place in Royals history. Next on the list is Hal McRae with 1,012. George Brett leads with 1,596. Ryan Bergert pitched a season-high six innings, allowing one run and six hits for his first win in five starts with Kansas City. Perez tied it at 1 with his 23rd homer when he connected off losing pitcher Aaron Civale. Bobby Witt Jr. chased Civale with a two-out, two-run single and Vinnie Pasquantino greeted Tyler Gilbert with a two-run single for a 5-1 lead.
Giants 12, Cubs 3 – Rafael Devers hits two of San Francisco’s four home runs, Giants power past Cubs 12-3
Rafael Devers homered twice and doubled in a run on the way to five RBIs, Matt Chapman hit his 200th career home run in the seventh, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 12-3 for their fourth straight win. Devers connected in the first and added a three-run drive in the sixth for his 21st career multihomer game, third this year and second since joining the Giants in a trade from Boston in mid-June. Giants rookie starter Carson Whisenhunt (2-1) allowed three runs on five hits, struck out three.

Tennis –Townsend and Ostapenko get into a tense back-and-forth after match
U.S. Open opponents Taylor Townsend and Jelena Ostapenko got into a face-to-face argument on the Court 11 sideline right after their second-round match ended. Townsend said Wednesday that Ostapenko told her she has no class and no education. Townsend, who is from Chicago, was a 7-5, 6-1 winner against 2017 French Open champion Ostapenko, who is from Latvia. After the two players met at the net for a postmatch handshake, they stayed near each other instead of going their separate ways, as players usually do. Ostapenko wagged a finger at Townsend as they spoke.
Tennis – Djokovic is trying to solve riddles at the US Open but is back in the 3rd round
Novak Djokovic says he is trying to solve riddles in his game at the U.S. Open. Even after dropping an opening set on Wednesday, Djokovic progressed to the third round. He improved to 36-0 across the first and second rounds in New York, a place he’s won four championships, by coming back to beat 145th-ranked American qualifier Zachary Svajda 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 at Arthur Ashe Stadium. This was Djokovic’s first tournament anywhere since losing to Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon semifinals last month. Winners included both of last year’s runners-up — Jessica Pegula and Taylor Fritz — and 2021 champion Emma Raducanu. No. 12 seed Casper Ruud, the 2022 runner-up, lost to Raphael Collignon.
NFL – Ben Johnson’s departure for Bears from Lions keeps NFC North rivalries roaring
The NFC North is home to some of the NFL’s richest and strongest rivalries. Ben Johnson made the latest move to stir up big feelings in the division. He left his post as offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions to become coach of the Chicago Bears. Johnson has the 2024 first-overall draft pick in Caleb Williams to work with at quarterback. He’s also taking over a Bears squad that finished 5-12 behind three teams that went a combined 30-11 during the regular season. The Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers also made key offseason upgrades to challenge the Lions.
NFL – Colts GM believes QB Anthony Richardson will still be a part of team’s future
Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard still believes Anthony Richardson will be part of the franchise’s long-term future. In fact, he still considers Richardson a potential franchise quarterback. Eight days after coach Shane Steichen announced that Daniel Jones had won the starting job for Indy’s season opener against Miami, Ballard insisted on Wednesday the franchise hasn’t turned the page on Richardson. Ballard says Richardson is still capable of realizing the potential the Colts saw when they selected him No. 4 overall in the 2023 draft.
NFL – Jaguars acquire receiver Tim Patrick from Lions for a 2026 6th round draft pick
The Jacksonville Jaguars are acquiring wide receiver Tim Patrick from Detroit for a sixth-round draft pick in 2026. The 31-year-old Patrick just needs to pass a physical for it to be official. Patrick missed all of 2022 and 2023 because of injuries but bounced back last season. He played 16 games for the Lions and finished with 33 receptions for 394 yards and three touchdowns. The Jaguars expect him to become their No. 5 receiver. They had been looking for a bigger receiver who could block on the perimeter and play special teams. Jacksonville waived receiver Austin Trammell to make room for Patrick on its roster.
NFL – NFL eases restrictions on Tom Brady’s role as Fox Sports analyst
The NFL is easing some restrictions on Tom Brady as he prepares for his second season as Fox Sports’ top analyst. Brady can now participate in production meetings with teams, but only virtually. He still can’t watch practices or visit training complexes. These rules are due to his 5% ownership stake in the Las Vegas Raiders. Brady attended virtual meetings with the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles before Super Bowl 59. He said not attending meetings didn’t affect his research. Fox’s top crew, including Brady, will call the NFC East matchup between the New York Giants and Washington Commanders on Sept. 7.
NFL – Chiefs Rashee Rice is suspended 6 games, beginning with opener next week in Brazil
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has been suspended for six games for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. The suspension follows his guilty plea to two third-degree felony charges related to a March 2024 crash in Dallas. The NFL’s decision comes after an internal investigation and voids a scheduled hearing. Rice will miss several high-profile games, including the season opener against the Chargers in Brazil and a Super Bowl rematch with the Eagles. He will be eligible to return on Oct. 19 when Kansas City faces the Raiders.
Golf – Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley leaves himself off the US team for Bethpage Black
U.S. captain Keegan Bradley decided the best way to win back the Ryder Cup was to leave his golf clubs at home. Bradley filled out his 12-man roster Wednesday with six captain’s picks that did not include himself. He had considered becoming the first playing captain of the Ryder Cup since Arnold Palmer in 1963 at East Lake. Instead, Bradley went with a pair of Ryder Cup rookies in New York native Cameron Young and Ben Griffin, who finished at No. 9 in the standings. Joining them as picks will be Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay. That gives the Americans four Ryder Cup rookies for the Sept. 26-28 matches against Europe at Bethpage Black on New York’s Long Island.
