Brewers 4, Cubs 1 – Brice Turang hits a 2-run homer as Brewers widen NL Central lead over Cubs with 4-1 win
Brice Turang hit a two-run homer, Isaac Collins drove in two insurance runs and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 4-1 on Thursday. Turang and Sal Frelick each had two hits as the Brewers opened a seven-game lead over Chicago in the NL Central. Milwaukee took the finale in a five-game series at Wrigley Field after the Cubs won three straight. The Brewers won Monday’s opener 7-0. Milwaukee starter Quinn Priester allowed one run on three hits in 4 1/3 innings, but fell short of winning his 11th straight decision. The right-hander issued a season-high five walks while striking out four and was relieved by Nick Mears (5-3) in the fifth. Five Brewers relievers limited Chicago to two hits. Trevor Megill worked around a single in the ninth for his 30th save.
Cubs starter Shota Imanaga (8-6) allowed two runs on three hits in seven innings, striking out five.

MLB – How MLB’s upcoming deals will change how you watch baseball
ESPN is nearing a deal with Major League Baseball to distribute out-of-market games. This comes after ESPN opted out of its previous contract with MLB in February. ESPN aims to secure a reworked package at a lower cost. Meanwhile, NBC, Netflix, and Apple TV are in talks for regular-season packages, the Wild Card round, and the Home Run Derby. Negotiations are expected to conclude by the end of the regular season next month. MLB is also trying to appease its other rights holders, Fox and Turner Sports, as it navigates these new deals.

NFL – Lions’ Hutchinson keeps focus on return to field during contract extension talks
Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson says he’s not paying much attention to his contract situation. Hutchinson’s representatives are negotiating a possible extension with the Lions. Hutchinson is focusing on returning to the field after he was sidelined for 13 games last season with a broken leg. That stretch included the Lions’ home playoff loss to the Washington Commanders. Hutchinson was cleared medically in May and hasn’t suffered any setbacks during training camp. He has not played during the preseason and that isn’t expected to change when the Lions host the Houston Texans on Saturday.

WNBA – Fever overcome Clark’s absence; 3 season-ending injuries to stay in playoff hunt
The Indiana Fever have overcome a barrage of critical injuries to stay in the WNBA playoff hunt. An injured right groin and subsequent bone bruise suffered while recovering have kept two-time All-Star guard Caitlin Clark out since July 15, and there’s still no timetable for her return. Backup guards Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson had season-ending injuries in the same game, Aug. 7 at Phoenix. Then Sunday, guard Sophie Cunningham sustained a season-ending knee injury. Still, with nine regular season games remaining, the resilient Fever are somehow still in playoff position.

WNBA – Man arrested for WNBA sex-toy throwing at Liberty game
An Ohio man has been arrested for the throwing of a sex toy at a WNBA game in New York. It’s the latest development in a string of disturbances where similar toys were tossed at WNBA games across the country, resulting in at least three arrests. New York police told The Associated Press that Charles Burgess from Dayton, Ohio, was arrested Wednesday for allegedly throwing an object at the Dallas Wings vs. New York Liberty game on Aug. 5. The object hit a 12-year-old girl and Burgess was charged with two counts of assault. Burgess’ lawyer said his client surrendered himself and pleaded not guilty.

NCAAFB – Northwestern reaches settlement with football coach who was fired
Northwestern University has reached a settlement with former longtime football coach Pat Fitzgerald two years after he sued the prestigious school over his firing amid a team hazing scandal. His attorneys and the school announced the settlement on Thursday, however the terms were not disclosed. Fitzgerald sued in 2023 for $130 million after he was fired, alleging the school illegally terminated his employment and damaged his reputation. The case was set to go to trial in November. Fitzgerald says he never had any knowledge of hazing. University officials agreed with the sentiment following interviews with players.

NCAAFB – SEC approves 9-game league schedule in 2026, joining Big Ten and Big 12
The Southeastern Conference is moving to a nine-game conference schedule beginning in 2026. The decision ends years of debate and potentially eases a path toward another expansion of the College Football Playoff. The change was approved by conference presidents and chancellors. It previously had been recommended by league athletic directors. The SEC has played eight conference games each season since 1992 when the conference expanded to 12 teams with the addition of Arkansas and South Carolina. The Atlantic Coast Conference still plays eight league games. The Big 12 and the Big Ten already play nine.

NHL – Blackhawks agree with Frank Nazar on a 7-year extension worth $46.13 million
The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to terms with forward Frank Nazar on a seven-year extension worth just over $46 million. The contract begins in the 2026-27 NHL season and runs through 2033. Nazar had 26 points in 53 games last season at ages 20 and 21. He helped the U.S. win the world hockey championship for the first time since 1933 and was invited to the Olympic orientation camp later this month as a candidate to play in Milan. Nazar is expected to be part of Chicago’s long-term future along with 2023 No. 1 pick Connor Bedard and young defenseman Artyom Levshunov.
